good Russian movies and audiobooks

I'm a Russian-speaking immigrant who grew up here in the US, and I'd like to improve on my language skills a bit. I learned a fairly stilted, polite, 1950's version of Russian from my family, and haven't really spent much time with people my age who use colloquialisms.

I'm interested in finding some good modern movies to watch, or some audio programs on mp3, to help with filling in the gaps.

-Movies-wise:
I'm not terribly into romance or relationship movies, but otherwise, just looking for 'good' films I guess. I'm not really sure what's out there, just don't want to spend time on anything terribly sappy. I assume at least some of you are counterculture folks and might have recommendations more in line with stuff I'm into.

-audio:
I'll be doing a huge drive across the country here soon and wanted stuff to listen to on the stereo. I guess I"m totally open as far as subject matter as long as it's a bit more like conversational modern Russian since learning it is my primary goal in this project. Internet radio recommendations, anyone? I"m not even sure where to begin here.

I'm reasonably fluent in spoken Russian in general, just clueless when it comes to colloquial speech. I'm not a great reader in Russian so researching this stuff on the Internet in russian-language sites is very slow for me.

New tribe- ethnic and traditional foods, slavic-friendly

I started a new tribe for discussing 'ethnic food' in general, and also for discussing food traditions- what people eat on traditional holidays and other special occasions, food in religious ritual, and anything else related to what the grandma's did besides cook the stuff.

Need imagery for cover of polyamory poetry collection

We are looking for a suitable image that can be used on the cover of a collection of poems centered around the theme of polyamory, open relationships, free love, polyandry etc. This is a small project with a limited production. We can't pay you in cash. However, if you have a picture you'd like to contribute to project, please contact us. We can't use anything that is copyrighted by someone who won't let use it, so please don't send us anything ripped off from someone else's wedsite or scanned illegally out of a magazine. We're only interested in things that can be used free and clear without expense or complex negotiations. What we're after is something that represents a good image of polyamory or non-monogamous love. This needs to be more along the lines of imagery depicting love and affection between 3 or more people - as opposed to group sex photo. It's fine if it has an erotic or sensual quality to it - but we're more interested in pictures of people three people gazing lovingly at each other with their clothes on than pictures of people having an orgy. Better something suggestive and G-rated than gratutious nudity or graphic sex. More interested in images of MFM than FMF. Willing to consider any kind of imagery - even if its something surrealistic or abstract rather than photos of live people - as long as it visually communicates the notion of polyamory in an interesting and appealing way. Any body got any images like that you're willing to let us use for this?

escaped both the rationalism of medieval scolastic philospohy and the
Renaissance. The modern age, based on Cartesian critical thought, only
penetrated there after a lag of some one or two hundred years.
_Hommo_sentimentalis_ thus failed to find there a sufficient
counterweight and became its own hyperbole commonly known as
_the_Slavic_soul._

Russia and France are the two poles of Europe that exercise eternal
mutual attraction. France is an old, tired country where nothing
remains of feelings but forms. A Frenchman may write at the end of a
letter: "Be so kind, dear sir, as to accept the assurance of my
delicate feelings." The first time I got such a letter, signed by a
secretary of the publishing house Gallimard, I was still living in
Prague. I jumped in the air for joy: in Paris there is a woman who
loves me! She managed to slip a declaration of love into a business
letter! SHe not only has feeling for me, but she expressly states that
they are delicate! Never in my life had a Czech woman said anything of
the kind to me!

Only years later was it explained to me in Paris that there exists a
whole semantic repertory of closing formulas for letters; thanks to
these formulas a Frenchman can determine with the precision of a
pharmasist the most subtle degree of feelings that he wants to
transmit to the addressee, without feeling them himself; on this
scale, "delicate feelings," expresses the lowest degree of official
politeness bordering almost on contempt.

Oh France, you are the land of Form, just as Russia is the land of
Feeling! That is why the Frenchman, eternally frustrated by not
feeling any flame burning in his breast, gazes with envy and nostalgia
toward the land of Dostoevsky, where men offer their puckered lips to
other men (*) and would cut the throat of anyone refusing their kiss.
(Besides, if they did cut anyone's throat they would be forgiven
immediatley, for it was their injured love that made them do it, as as
we know. .... love makes people innocent. A lovesick murderer
will find at least a hundred and twenty Paris lawyers ready to send a
special train to Moscow to defend him. The will not be driven to do so
by compassion---a feeling too exotic and seldom practiced at
home---but by abstract principles, their sole passion. The Russian
murderer will fail to understand this, and once free will rush at his
French defence lawyer to hug and kiss him on the mouth. The Frenchman
will back away in horror, the Russian will take offense, plunge a
knife into his body, and the whole story will repeat itsef like the
song about the dog and the crust of bread.) (**)

(*) It is not in fact socially exceptable for Russian men to kiss each
other on the mouth, unless they are very high Communist Party
functionaries. And the Czech aparatchiks puckered up quite readily for
their Russian counterparts. In fact, this kissing led to some of the
funnier Soviet era jokes: "As Arafat is leaving Moscow, Brezhnev is
waving at the airplane and crying. He is asked, 'Comrad Secretary
General, surely Chairman Arafat is not that great of a statesman?'
"No, comrades,' replies Brezhnev, 'he is not much of a statesman at
all, ... but what a kisser!'"

(**) The song, which I am guessing is the same in both Czech and
Russian, and is a rhyme taught to young children goes like this:
The priest had a dog.
He loved it.
The dog ate a crust of bread,
He killed it.
Buried it in the earth, and wrote on the inscription:

Berlin Love Parade is Back!!!!!

"The largest party in the world finally returns to Berlin after two years. Also, some details on Paul Van Dyk's party the night before.
After two years of political struggles and financial problems, The Love Parade has a new sponsor and is ready to return to Berlin in full force on July 15, 2006. This year there will be a special voting area where fans will decide on the DJs to perform at the event.

The focus of this year's Love Parade is on the international music scene. Much like the parades of year's past, the 2006 event will feature series of floats hosting some of the best DJs and artists from around the world. The parade is free for the public and attendence is expected to surpass events of previous years.

I'm Lilaclady and I am new to this tribe.....My ancestors are mostly from Russia(Moscow and St. petersberg) I have never been and am facinated with the culture....hopefully i will get to visit someday....I have russian nesting dolls have a friend that is going to russia next month and will bring me more goodies!!! anything you can share with me about your experiences....the food,language, customs would be lovely. take care love & light lilaclady

In the news I heard... recently President Bush went to Russia to meet with Vladimir Putin. They were talking about some of their "disagreements." Would anyone care to explain what those "disagreements" are? I am curious and would like learn of what the news people are talking about.
