Re: how about Gogol Bordello ?
Sun, July 9, 2006 - 11:53 PMnyc is their home base, although the band members are originally from eastern europe/CIS for the most part i think.
the lead singer, Eugene Hutz, starred in Everything is Illuminated and featured a couple of their songs in it.
they played in SF recently at Slims, excellent show -- definitely see them when you get a chance.

Re: how about Gogol Bordello ?
Tue, July 11, 2006 - 7:50 PMGogol Bordello is a Gypsy punk band from New York City, although many of the members are immigrants from Eastern Europe. Much of their sound is inspired by Gypsy music, and the band incorporates minor-key accordion and fiddle mixed with cabaret and punk energy, dub, electric guitar and drums. In New York City they're known for their frenetic, hungry stage shows in the Lower East Side, and have also toured in Europe and America since 2000.
Gogol Bordello is led by their charismatic singer, Ukrainian immigrant Eugene Hütz (DJ Hütz), who was featured as a translator in the 2005 independent film adaptation of Everything is Illuminated.
The band formed in 1999, when Hütz moved to New York City. Their first single was released in 1999, and several full-length albums have followed since then, as well as a European tour. According to the New York Times, "Gogol Bordello has become an underground phenomenon in New York with its brand of contrarian globalism. Their sound is raucous, sweaty, tuneful and recklessly vibrant, like the punk and Gypsy music that inspired them. Iggy Pop meets Kafka. A weird blend of the Dead Kennedys, Flogging Molly, and the Decemberists (only the instrumental sound can be related to the Decemberists.)" In an interview with NPR, Hütz cites Jimi Hendrix and Parliament-Funkadelic as among the band's musical influences, and Nikolai Gogol, the band's namesake, as an ideological influence.
Their song "My Strange Uncles From Abroad" is representative of their folksy Eastern European sound. "Start Wearing Purple" pioneered their UK success, and their song "Occurrence on the Border" was featured on the 4th Punk Rock Strike compilation.
Some of the band members also take part in a side project entitled J.U.F. (Jewish-Ukranian Freundschaft), whose sound is similar to that of Gogol Bordello.
They have more recenty been announced as one of the many bands playing at the Reading and Leeds festivals in the UK.

Thu, October 12, 2006 - 7:49 PMThey were best with JUF. Everything since Tamil Muskat seems repetitive. I love these guys but I miss the horns and the Klezmer vibe of the 2005 stuff.

Tue, July 11, 2006 - 10:31 PMyeah i saw that movie, it's good. ..gypsy punk... those that know 'blatnie' Odessa songs from 70s and 80s will recognize the style right away... although it wasn't called gypsy :) -

Tue, July 11, 2006 - 11:17 PMblatniye/shanson and the catchy stolen part of the purple song must be at least 70 years old - tsiplenok zharenniy.
that wikipedea article is pretty good, only i think they themselves would say that they're probably just as inspired by punk as they are by gypsy music. and i've never heard about the side project - now i have to check it out.
thanks for sharing that with us
